A new wholesale market and vehicle workshop mark an important step towards Wolverhampton Council’s climate change commitments.
The city’s wholesale market is being redeveloped into a new mixed-use complex which will also house the council’s vehicle fleet and service workshop.
The City of Wolverhampton council has committed to achieving net zero carbon in all its activities by 2028. With its vehicle fleet currently accounting for around 15% of emissions, the new facility is vital step towards achieving this goal by enabling the fleet’s transition to electric vehicles.

CWC have been appointed to carry out the Stage 4 technical design, which includes the base build for the wholesale market units, vehicle workshop and associated offices and staff facilities.
In preparation for the transition to zero emissions vehicles, the workshop will be served by PV panels which are expected to provide a significant portion of the council fleet’s charging requirements. The PVs specified already exceed planning requirements, with the ability to add more panels and charging points in the future to expand PV and charging capacity.
The workshop is further provided with high bay electric radiant heating, a drive through vehicle wash for HGVs and an extract system with portable exhaust extract.
The project is currently going through planning.
