The market comprises two Grade II listed buildings which contribute significantly to the character and heritage of the city centre. These Victorian halls now require refurbishment and modernisation to continue to increase the market’s destination offering and act as a catalyst for continuing investment and commercial development in the city.
New layouts have been proposed to improve circulation in both spaces, provide new units, basement storage, a café and a double vaulted first floor space with views over the main market hall.
Crookes Walker have been appointed to provide MEP design for the refurbishment of the two market halls, plus a temporary space to accommodate traders whilst works take place. The fit-out is designed to increase energy efficiency and occupier comfort, whilst complimenting and maintaining the historic character of the buildings.
The old gas heating system will be replaced with an all-electric system of mechanical air handling units with integrated air source heat pumps. Mixed mode ventilation will utilise the existing louvres where appropriate for natural ventilation, and heat pump air curtains will minimise heat loss from the units and improve heating efficiency.
The highly efficient lighting scheme has been designed to be sympathetic to the building design, incorporating existing fittings whist replacing lamps, with feature lighting in the entrance areas to highlight the architecture.
The refurbished market will enhance the city’s historic character, whilst contributing to Wrexham’s vision to become an attractive 21st century destination.
