Carbon roadmaps for NHS health centres.
The NHS has an ambitious plan to be the world’s first net zero national health service, targeting net zero for its directly controlled emissions by 2040. With an ambition to reach an 80% reduction by 2028-2032, the NHS needs to significantly reduce carbon emissions from its existing buildings.

Crookes Walker were appointed to survey 15 health centres in the Leeds area and identify opportunities for heat decarbonisation.
A carbon analysis was carried out for each site, benchmarking energy consumption against average and good practice figures, and forecasting future consumption (in different scenarios.)
Opportunities for decarbonisation were mapped out using a four pillar approach to energy efficiency, focusing a fabric first approach to minimise the impact of the buildings on the environment. The carbon roadmap for each site was then assessed against the key criteria for funding under the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.

Of the 15 sites surveyed, most were built between the 1970s – 1990s and offered significant scope to reduce carbon emissions.
Overall, CWC identified potential carbon savings of approximately 530 TC02e in the first year.
